What Should I Do About My Vitamin D Deficiency?
Key Information
- Your vitamin D level is significantly low and needs a two-phase treatment plan.
- First, complete the full seven-week high-dose vitamin D prescription exactly as prescribed.
- Only after the seven-week course is finished, start a daily maintenance supplement containing 25-50 micrograms (1,000-2,000 IU) of vitamin D.
- You can buy the maintenance supplement over the counter from a pharmacy or most large supermarkets.
What Is the Treatment Plan?
Phase 1: Take the prescribed high-strength vitamin D course exactly as directed for seven weeks. Finish the full course.
Phase 2: After the prescription course is complete, switch to a daily maintenance supplement containing 25-50 micrograms (1,000-2,000 IU) of vitamin D (also known as colecalciferol).
Why Is Treatment Important?
Vitamin D is important for bone health, muscle function and energy levels. Correcting a deficiency may help symptoms such as tiredness, aches or pains when these are caused by low vitamin D.
What Happens Next?
- Complete the seven-week prescription course.
- Then start the daily maintenance supplement.
- Contact the practice if you are unsure about the plan or have questions.
