What Should I Do About Iron Deficiency Anaemia?
Key Information
- Your blood test shows that your iron level is low.
- Take the prescribed iron tablets as directed on the box; you will likely need them for at least three months.
- Common side effects include constipation, stomach upset or nausea, and your poo will usually become very dark or black.
- If side effects are too disruptive, contact the practice.
How Should I Take My Iron Tablets?
Take the iron exactly as directed on the box. You will likely need treatment for at least three months to correct the low level and rebuild your iron stores.
Taking the tablet with a source of vitamin C, such as a small glass of orange juice, can help your body absorb the iron.
What Side Effects Should I Expect?
Constipation, stomach upset and nausea are common, especially when you first start treatment. Very dark or black poo is also an expected effect of taking iron tablets.
If the tablets upset your stomach, you can try taking them with or shortly after food, or taking them every other day.
When Should I Contact the Practice?
Try to continue treatment if you can, but contact Blithehale Medical Centre if side effects are too disruptive or if you have further questions.
What Happens Next?
- Collect and start your prescribed iron tablets.
- Take them as directed for at least three months, unless advised otherwise.
- Keep taking them long enough to rebuild your iron stores, not just until you begin to feel better.
